It is impossible to predict with certainty how AI will change employment, which new opportunities will emerge, or how quickly workplaces and institutions will adapt. However, we have a responsibility to take seriously the possibility that today’s children will enter a workforce radically different from the one familiar to adults now.

When SAIFCA first published our article on AI and employment in May 2025, we warned that children were likely to inherit a dramatically changed workforce, and that education, public policy, and wider assumptions about work needed to adjust.

Since then, AI capabilities have advanced substantially, workplace adoption has expanded, and early signs of labour-market disruption have become more visible. We have therefore updated the article with a stronger framing, reflecting an increased confidence that severe disruption to employment and established routes into work is an increasingly plausible outcome.

The exact scale and timing are very uncertain. Technical capability does not translate immediately into widespread deployment, and factors including cost, infrastructure, reliability, regulation, organisational inertia, and public acceptance will influence the pace of change. These delays offer valuable time to prepare, but they should not be mistaken for evidence that the underlying disruption will remain limited.

The updated article also examines how employment could decline before an AI system is capable of replacing an entire profession. If organisations can automate enough tasks, they might recruit fewer people, combine roles, reduce outsourced work, or expect considerably more from each remaining employee.

Entry-level work needs specific attention. Junior roles have traditionally allowed young people to develop judgment, practical understanding, and professional experience. If many of their component tasks are automated, children could eventually encounter a missing first rung on the career ladder, even in fields where experienced professionals remain in demand.

Preparation must extend well beyond teaching children to use AI tools. They will need strong foundational and subject knowledge, metacognition, independent reasoning, creativity, communication, collaboration, and practical experience. These capabilities help people recognise the limits of their understanding, evaluate information, approach unfamiliar problems, and adapt as circumstances change.

The revised guidance also considers cognitive offloading. Chatbots can produce plans, explanations, reasoning, and finished work within seconds - potentially removing the mental effort through which children develop knowledge and intellectual independence. AI use that follows a meaningful attempt could create a different learning experience to asking a system to undertake the thinking from the outset.

The consequences reach well beyond children’s future employability. Today’s children include the future adults who will develop, deploy, scrutinise, regulate, and govern increasingly capable AI systems. Their ability to reason independently, recognise uncertainty, question persuasive outputs, and exercise sound judgment, will influence decisions affecting their society as a whole.

Our updated guidance includes practical recommendations for:

  • Parents and carers who want to help children build strong, adaptable foundations without attempting to predict a single “AI-proof” career.
  • Schools seeking to protect independent learning, subject knowledge, assessment integrity, and metacognitive development.
  • Policymakers responsible for workforce planning, education, routes into employment, social protection, and the distribution of AI’s economic gains.

Responsibility for managing this transition cannot be placed on children, nor exclusively on schools or parents. Governments, employers, education systems, and AI companies will all help determine whether technological progress supports secure and meaningful adult lives, or weakens opportunity while concentrating its benefits elsewhere.

Uncertainty should encourage serious preparation while there is still time to shape the transition.
