Why SAIFCA Is Independent: To Speak Clearly for Children
At SAIFCA, independence is central to our mission.
We exist to protect children from the risks posed by AI. That means our positions must be shaped by evidence, ethics and the best interests of children - not by the interests of funders, technology companies, or organisations that could limit what we are able to say.
For that reason, we have chosen not to accept funding where we felt it could compromise our independence, create a conflict with our mission, or affect public trust in our work.
We believe that was the right decision…
We also want to be honest - it means SAIFCA is currently operating without funding, and we are relying on the support of our community to keep our work going.
If you’re able to help, please consider making a donation. Every contribution goes directly towards sustaining SAIFCA’s independent work to protect children in the age of AI.
What We've Done in Our First Year
In just over a year, SAIFCA has made a significant impact as a small, independent organisation.
We have taken our work to the UK House of Lords, contributing to efforts to improve regulation of AI companion systems. We have also been represented at UNESCO in Paris, raising concerns about the risks emotionally engaging AI systems may pose to children.
We launched our Non-Negotiables Campaign, advocating for three essential protections that we believe no AI product used by children should ever violate.
We published a comprehensive guide to AI risks for children, made freely available to schools and families. We issued some of the earliest guidance on the removal of identifiable photos of children from school websites, and provided free briefings to law enforcement and teaching bodies.
We have built close relationships with organisations working in this space, including becoming an affiliate of the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI, where SAIFCA’s founder holds a seat on the leadership Council and chairs a working group on AI safety for children.
We have also been honoured by the support of our community, including a kind endorsement from Sir Stephen Fry.
A small organisation can have real impact - SAIFCA has shown that.
Now we need your help to keep going.
If you can, please consider making a donation today. You can also join our community to stay involved in our work as we continue campaigning to protect children from the risks posed by AI - now and in the future.
