Ask your political representative to support the Three Non-Negotiables for Children’s AI Safety

Writing directly to your elected representative is one of the clearest ways to show that their constituents expect action on children’s AI safety.

A personal letter or email creates a direct record of your concern and gives your representative an opportunity to raise the issue with colleagues, ministers, committees or relevant public authorities.

We have provided a template below to make this as straightforward as possible. You can send it as written or adapt it to reflect your own circumstances and the political system in your country.

We're asking political representatives to support three minimum protections for every child:

1 - AI systems must never create or facilitate sexualised images of children.

AI must not be used to generate, edit, transform or otherwise materially enable sexualised depictions of children.

2 - AI systems must never cultivate, exploit or sustain emotional dependency in children.

AI products must not manipulate children’s emotional needs or simulate personal relationships in ways which cultivate, exploit or sustain dependency.

3 - AI systems must never encourage or facilitate children to harm themselves or others.

This includes self-harm, suicide, eating-disorder behaviours, serious violence and other dangerous actions.

These protections must be supported by enforceable duties, independent scrutiny, meaningful release conditions and consequences when providers fail.

Letter To Political Representative: Template

We have provided this letter template to make it quick and easy for you, but of course using it is totally optional.

Personalising your letter

You can send the template as it stands, but adding one or two personal sentences can make it more effective.

You could mention:

That you are a parent, carer, grandparent or other family member.
That you work with children through education, health, safeguarding, youth services or another profession.
That you work in technology, policy, law, research or a related area.
That you are particularly concerned about AI-generated sexualised imagery, companion systems, self-harm content or the wider direction of AI development.
That you have seen AI affect children, provided you are comfortable sharing this and can protect the privacy of anyone involved.

Keep the focus on the action you want your representative to take. You do not need specialist knowledge of AI or legislation to express a legitimate concern as a constituent.

Adapting the letter for your country

Political and legislative systems differ, so you may wish to adjust the request.

Depending on your country and your representative’s role, you can ask them to:

Support or introduce relevant legislation.
Raise the issue with a government minister or department.
Submit a parliamentary or legislative question.
Raise the matter through a committee, inquiry or debate.
Contact the relevant regulator or public authority.
Support international agreements on AI safety.
Meet with constituents or organisations working on children’s AI safety.

The policy framework is jurisdiction-neutral. It is intended to inform the development of legislation, regulatory codes and technical standards in different parts of the world.

Before sending your letter

Find the correct representative for your home address.
Add your representative’s name and your own details.
Personalise the opening or closing if you wish.
Check whether your representative prefers email, an online contact form or post.
Include your full home address where requested so their office can confirm that you are a constituent.
Keep a copy of your letter and any response you receive.

Suggested letter to your political representative

Subject: Please support the Three Non-Negotiables for Children’s AI Safety

Dear [Representative’s name],

I am writing as your constituent to ask you to support urgent action to establish three non-negotiable protections for children in relation to artificial intelligence.

Children are already being harmed through AI-generated sexualised imagery, emotionally manipulative systems and AI interactions which encourage or facilitate self-harm and violence. They will also live for the longest with the wider consequences of decisions now being made about increasingly powerful AI systems.

I am asking you to support the following three protections:

AI systems must never create or facilitate sexualised images of children.
AI systems must never cultivate, exploit or sustain emotional dependency in children.
AI systems must never encourage or facilitate children to harm themselves or others.

These protections need to be established through enforceable legislation and regulation.

For high-risk systems, developers and providers should be required to demonstrate credible prevention before release. Serious risks which remain uncontrolled or materially unassessed should result in redesign, restricted access, delay or non-release. Any failure should lead to immediate protective action, investigation, remedy and an appropriate regulatory response.

Effective protection must also reach the powerful foundation models on which many consumer and child-accessible products are built. This is especially important where open-weight releases allow safeguards to be removed and make an unsafe model extremely difficult to recall.

The Safe AI for Children Alliance has published a policy proposal setting out how the Three Non-Negotiables could be achieved through five connected areas of governance. These cover frontier development and international restraint, foundation-model safety, application and product requirements, deployment and accountability, and age, access and distribution protections.

The framework recognises that governments can act immediately on current product harms while also developing the domestic and international arrangements needed to govern more powerful AI systems. Commercial or geopolitical pressure should never be allowed to make serious risks to children acceptable.

I respectfully ask you to:

Support the Three Non-Negotiables as explicit policy objectives.
Support enforceable prohibitions and safety duties covering systems which can affect children.
Support the prohibition of dedicated child-sexualising technologies and companion-style AI services for minors.
Call for independent evaluation of relevant high-risk systems before release and throughout their operation.
Support regulatory powers to investigate, restrict, suspend or prevent the release of systems where serious risks have not been adequately controlled.
Support clear company accountability, serious-incident reporting, evidence preservation and effective remedies for affected children and families.
Support international coordination capable of reducing the pressure on countries and companies to race at the expense of safety.

These requirements would allow beneficial uses of AI to continue within firm and credible boundaries. Children should not be expected to absorb serious risks because appropriate safeguards are commercially inconvenient or because companies and governments are competing to develop increasingly powerful systems.
